The majority of all gastrointestinal infections are triggered by noroviruses, which can cause vomiting, diarrhea, and abdominal pain. Noroviruses belong to the Caliciviridae family and are known to cause “winter sickness” or “stomach flu”, indicating their rapid spread in the human population, especially during the winter months.

As noroviruses are highly contagious, they pose a serious problem for healthcare facilities with debilitated patients, such as nursing homes. (1)
