Meningitis

Comprehensive test results with the Vivalytic Bacterial Meningitis test*

Bacterial meningitis, an infectious disease characterized by infection and inflammation of the meninges, causes significant morbidity and mortality worldwide. Even when diagnosed early and treated appropriately, 8-15% of patients die, usually between 24 and 48 hours after the onset of symptoms. (1)

Bacterial meningitis is a disease with a high mortality rate that requires timely and appropriate diagnosis and treatment to avoid death. In survivors, it can lead to lifelong disabilities. Meningitis affects all age groups. Newborns are most at risk from group B streptococci, young children are at higher risk from meningococci, pneumococci and Haemophilus influenzae. Young adults and adolescents are particularly at risk of contracting meningococci, while older people may be particularly affected by pneumococci. (2)

Bacterial meningitis is a medical emergency and prompt and specific antibiotic treatment should be initiated immediately.

Vivalytic’s point of care PCR test* enables rapid and targeted detection of bacterial meningitis directly at the point of sample collection. Compared to the time-consuming traditional diagnostic procedures, it is considered promising in speeding up the diagnosis.

What exactly happens in the Vivalytic Analyser?

The Vivalytic Analyser automates complex, molecular diagnostic processes that previously had to be carried out manually. This promotes high safety and quick availability of the test results.

1. Step
Samples are processed reliably.
2. Step
The external membrane of the cells is broken down through ultrasound.
3. Step
The nucleic acid (DNA/RNA) is purified for the PCR amplification.
4. Step
Specific DNA sequences are multiplied using PCR.
5. Step
The amplified DNA is identified by detecting a fluorescence or chemiluminescence signal.
